Scenario 1

Mark tells you that he and his girlfriend Janet had sex for the first time. When you ask him if he had thought about protection against an unplanned pregnancy, he tells you that they chose to use withdrawal.

Your group must work together to develop a conversation providing appropriate suggestions around contraception decision making and contraception use.

After the presentation, use the following questions to lead a discussion in the class health science blog:

a) Are the suggestions provided for the scenario appropriate? Why?

b) Can you suggest other ways the characters may have handled this situation?

c) What were the feelings of the characters as you watched this role-play?

  1. a)The suggestions are quite appropriate. Firstly, they don't want an unplanned pregnancy and this is the best way to do that as it prevents the egg from implanting into the uterine lining and therefore there will not be any pregnancy.

    b) Mark & Janet can be shocked & surprised that withdrawal can cause pregnancy.

    c) The characters did not show much feelings except seriousness and surprise (when Janet said that she did not like the idea of having the IUD implanted into her.

  2. a) The suggestions was quite appropriate, because using IUD implant, the effect would take place immediately, which will help remove the unwanted pregnancy

    b) I think that using birth control pills or "after morning pills" will be better

    c) The character would have felt frighten and scared, because they now know that the withdrawal method isnt very safe and they might even contact sexually transmitted diseases.

  3. a) The suggestion was appropriate, as the IUD is a very effective, long-lasting, and safe method to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

    b) They could have used a condom or taken the oral pill.

c)I did not really see much feelings, except for a lot of laughter. But still, they managed to show shocked feelings when the 'doctor' told them that the withdrawal method was inappropriate and could lead to serious consequences, like having sexually transmitted diseases.

  4. a)The suggestions were appropriate. An IUD would prevent the fertilized egg from implanting itself onto the lining of the womb so Janet will not get pregnant.

b)Mark should not have had used the withdrawal method and should have chosen to use other contraceptive methods such as the condoms or Janet could have used a diaphragm.

c)The characters were serious but there wasn't much surprise or shock or other emotions.

  7. a) The suggestions were appropriate. Using the IUD implantation method, the egg cell would not be able to embed itself in the uterus lining and thus pregnancy will be prevented.

    b) Since they now know that the withdrawal method may also cause pregnancy, Janet might want to consider consuming the "Morning after" pills so as to prevent unplanned pregnancy.

    c) As they learnt that using the withdrawal method may cause pregnancy and even pass STDs, they will be shocked and regretful.

  8. a) The suggestions were appropriate. The IUD could prevent the zygote from attaching itself onto the walls of the uterus and thus, develop into a embryo.

    b) I think that they can use the 'morning after' pills since they already had sexual intercourse before and the woman might be pregnant.

    c) The characters were shocked and scared as they thought that the withdrawal method was effective and they felt scared as there was a higher chance of unwanted pregnancy.

  13. a) Yes, they are appropriate as there will be no possible fertilisation and development of a zygote.
